Off to the heads of Di Filippo Bentivegna

Castello Incantato is just on the outskirts of Sciacca. The home of the enchanted and accursed artist Di Filippo Bentivegna (1888-1967). From our first visit in 2007 it has become a special place.

"... While cleaning the terrain from the many rocks which were dispersed on the plot, he got the idea to carve them into impersonations of people.

Carving heads into the limestone rocks would become a life-time project, resulting in the creation of some three thousand heads. When asked why he made these sculptures, Bentivegna would answer that he did this just for himself, without any intention of selling them.

Bentivegna also made frescoes on the wall of a cabin in the garden with memories of his stay in the US, urban scenes with skyscrapers, creations that nowadays are considered as art brut. ..."

Eleanor, Joey and Cowley among the heads.

Jamie and Kristin on the winding paths.

The colors have faded but not the creativity.

Eleanor taking a break.

Sarah strolling the paths under with an almond tree in bloom.

Vista beyond out to the Mediterranean Sea.

One of the caves he created while mining the stone for his hundreds of heads.

Some heads show more detail and are said to depict local people of the his time.

Posing with the a head.

Until next time...
