On the ceramic stairs: 2 Febbraio 2012

We found the ceramic stairs...
By Joey

Many towns in Sicily have a public stairway in the center of town where the risers are all decorated with rows of ceramic tiles, each tile being different from any other.  They are painted (glazed) with scenes of every day life, religious themes, marine life, etc.  We found Sciacca's.  It's actually a couple of doors down from our apartment.  Not surprising that images of the sea abound in this port city.  At the top of the stairs is a statue of a mermaid and a ceramic mural of mermaids and ships.

Also everywhere in the town are ceramic murals depicting all kinds of scenes cemented to the outsides of buildings.  Maybe it wouldn't work in a less temperate environment but I think it decorates the streets in a most wonderful way.  We'll take some photos to show you some of these wall tiles.
